How to Style a Cheerleading Ponytail for Competition Day

Comp day hair can make or break your confidence before you even hit the mat. The difference between a ponytail that lasts through every stunt and one that starts sliding by round two comes down to a few key steps. Here's exactly how to style your cheerleading ponytail so it stays perfect from warm up to trophy.

What you'll need

Before you start, get everything on the table. You'll need a good quality brush set (a tease brush and a smooth brush are non-negotiable), hair ties, bobby pins, strong hold hairspray, and your ponytail. If you have a Lotte & Belle Ponytail Fix Kit, have that ready too.

Step 1: Prep your natural hair

Start with clean, dry hair. The cleaner your hair, the better your natural ponytail will sit and the easier your extension will blend. Pull your hair into a tight, high ponytail and secure with at least two hair ties. The base needs to be solid. If it moves, everything on top will move too.

Step 2: Secure your competition ponytail

Using your ponytail fix kit, thread your ponytail onto your base with needle and thread for maximum hold. This is the competition standard technique. Wrap additional hair ties around the base and finish with bobby pins at the join to ensure nothing shifts during tumbling or stunts.

Step 3: Backcomb for volume

Take your tease brush and backcomb sections of your ponytail from mid-length upward toward the base. Work in layers. This is what gives you that full, competition-worthy volume that photographs beautifully under stage lights. Don't rush this step. It's the one that takes your ponytail from good to great.

Step 4: Smooth the top layer

Once you have your volume, use your smooth brush to lightly dress the top layer. You want to keep all that backcombed fullness underneath while the surface looks polished and sleek. Think of it as a controlled finish, not flat.

Step 5: Curl if your team style calls for it

If your team style calls for curls, work in sections from underneath first and work your way around. Real human hair like the Lotte & Belle Signature Pony holds a curl beautifully. Set each curl for a few seconds, release gently, and allow it to cool before touching. Rushing this step means the curl won't hold.

Step 6: Lock it in

Once you're happy with the shape, spray with a strong hold hairspray. Hold the can about 30cm away and mist evenly rather than soaking any one section. For extra longevity, a light mist over the base helps keep everything anchored.

How long does it take?

Allow 20 to 30 minutes on comp morning. It sounds like a lot, but rushing your ponytail is one of the main reasons athletes end up stressed on the day. Build it into your schedule and you'll arrive feeling ready.

The secret to a ponytail that lasts all day

The biggest factor is starting with a solid base. If your natural hair is secured properly, everything else stays in place. The second factor is using 100% real human hair. Unlike synthetic options, real human hair moves naturally, holds style, and looks just as good in round three as it did in round one.
